Police discuss resources available to victims of domestic violence

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and more than 10 million people in the United States are physically abused by a partner each year, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Springfield police works to ensure domestic violence victims in Western Massachusetts are informed about the resources available to them.

“Domestic violence calls are generally the number one our officers respond to year after year,” said Springfield Police spokesman Ryan Walsh.

Springfield police said they responded to more than 8,400 domestic violence calls in 2023. So far in 2024, that number has surpassed 7,000 in more than two months. They said that equates to more than 24 domestic disturbance calls per day.

“It’s way too high. We want people who are in these toxic relationships to come out and get the help they need,” Walsh added.

Walsh told Western Mass News there are several resources available to victims in the city. The department has a team of domestic violence advocates available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Restraining orders can be filed after 4:30 p.m., when courts are closed, and throughout the day on weekends and holidays. He also said that if an attorney is not available, a special victim detective can help.

“This is something that is not tied to a month or a day. It’s a year-round thing. In general, unfortunately for many victims, it is a cycle. They may come in and report it, but when they go home they experience the same toxic relationship, and it happens over and over again,” Walsh explained.
