Day laborers plead guilty and appeal in Talladega Co. assault investigation

TALLADEGA COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – Two daycare workers caught on surveillance video physically punishing children at a Talladega County daycare have pleaded guilty to their charges but immediately appealed after being sentenced to prison.

Jasmine Ragland and Shirley Curry have now been released from prison on appeal.

Ragland pleaded guilty this week to assault and harassment charges and was sentenced to 120 days in jail and a suspended sentence of 60 days in jail. Curry pleaded guilty to harassment and was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 30 days probation.

Talladega City Attorney Will Lawrence told WBRC the women pleaded guilty instead of going to trial in city court. Your case will be heard in the Court of Appeal. Lawrence said each charge carries a prison sentence of up to six months.

Lakkeria Swain reached out to WBRC 6 News this summer after she said she picked up her 3-year-old son from Precious Vessels Learning Center and noticed welts on his leg.

Swain said she returned to the daycare and asked to see surveillance video that showed her son being hit with an open hand by a worker and repeatedly whipped with a belt by another worker.
