A man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of a double shooting that left one person dead and another injured in south Phoenix Monday morning.

Phoenix police identified and arrested 49-year-old Refugio Jimenez in connection with a shooting that killed 29-year-old Rashaad Johnson and sent a 32-year-old woman to the hospital.

During Thursday’s arrest, police said Jimenez “discarded” a firearm, was wearing body armor and was found in possession of methamphetamine. He was booked into a Maricopa County jail on suspicion of nine felony counts, including one count of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm.

During an interview with investigators, Jimenez claimed he was resisting, but police said that was not supported by evidence found at the crime scene.

The shooting happened around 12:50 a.m. Monday in the area of West Sunland and South 15th Avenue. According to Phoenix police, officers found two people with gunshot wounds. The Phoenix Fire Department pronounced Johnson dead at the scene and took the woman to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Her condition was stable on Thursday, police said.

A preliminary police investigation indicated that Johnson was in an altercation outside his residence that escalated into a shooting. According to police, both Johnson and the woman, as well as several residences in the area, were targeted during the shooting.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, Jimenez is being held on a $1.5 million bond.

No further details were released. The investigation was still ongoing.
