Dead Rising has had many protagonists over the years, from slicecyle expert and everyone’s favorite dad Chuck Greene to the most skilled craftsman Nick Ramos. While these two are great, Capcom has made it clear over the years that the photojournalist who created the series is their favorite – Frank West.

I wish I could relive Dead Rising for the first time

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is the best way to play Frank West’s adventures, but I’ll never forget my first time.

As Lifeseeker’s song about the sarcastic everyman makes clear, Frank is an icon for many reasons, from his impeccable clothing style to his ability to lug around a park bench with ease. Perhaps the most iconic thing about him, however, is the line he speaks to Jessie at the start of the game, which later became his catchphrase. Say it with me now: “I covered wars, you know.”

Since Frank uttered these words in the first Dead Rising, the phrase has become synonymous with both the series and the character, as evidenced by Capcom’s use in later entries. It seems that the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster team was well aware of how important the line is to fans, as Frank West’s new voice actor, Jas Patrick, confirmed to me that it received special attention.

When I spoke to Patrick about his time as Frank West in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, I asked him what it was like following the original game’s script so closely, since the remaster uses the same dialogue as the original game. Patrick says it was a smooth process for the most part, comparing the recording to dubbing an anime.

Patrick says he had an easy time getting most of the shots, but that he and Capcom gave Frank’s catchphrase “special loving care.” It didn’t take too many attempts to get the line right, but Patrick says the team wanted to take their time to get this scene in particular right.

I don’t think it took that many tries to get it right, but we took extra care with it. You know, we tried. We took our time and tried to get it right. -Jas Patrick

Funnily enough, this isn’t the only sign that Capcom is aware of the love for Frank’s catchphrase. One of the game’s DLC costumes actually shows what Frank looked like during his war reporting days, giving us a glimpse into the character that was previously just a popular quote.
