D.C. Supreme Court Justice Heide Herrmann ordered a defendant to remain in custody because of the violence of the stabbing as he waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Oct. 15.

Jeremiah Hall, 38, is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon for his alleged involvement in an Oct. 6 stabbing in the 1500 block of Benning Road, NE. One person suffered injuries to his chest and back.

According to court documents, the victim said he was outside when a suspect approached him and asked him the location of his “clippers.” Confused, the victim tried to leave but was suddenly stabbed in his back by the suspect. He managed to escape, but was attacked again by the same suspect at a nearby bus stop.

During the hearing, Jesse Winograd, Hall’s attorney, told the court that Hall had waived his right to the preliminary hearing.

The prosecution argued that there were no appropriate conditions for the defendant’s release, citing the violent nature of the crime, Hall’s criminal record and the victim’s hospitalization. She believed there was enough evidence to continue Hall’s imprisonment.

Winograd agreed with the characterization.

Judge Herrmann agreed to the charges and ruled that Hall will remain in custody.

The parties are scheduled to meet again on November 5th.
