Denise, 66, is best known for her role as Denise Osbourne in the ITV soap from 1992 to 2017.

Now she takes on a new role as Joyce Madden, the assistant to TV channel boss Lord Tony Baddingham (David Tennant).

Last year she filmed her scenes for the new Hulu series, which is available to stream on Disney+ for UK viewers

Denise looks unrecognizable in the series, wearing classic ’80s fashion, short blonde hair and wearing scanty glasses.

At first glance, Joyce seems to be nothing more than a serious and no-nonsense secretary, but it quickly becomes clear that Denise’s character is full of wit.

While speaking to Cameron (Nafessa Williams) in one scene, the sassy secretary says, “I don’t get paid to have an opinion,” before immediately giving her opinion to the drama producer.

As well as playing Joyce in Rivals and Denise in Corrie, the TV star also appeared in Emmerdale, the canceled Prime Video hit My Lady Jane and the popular detective drama Grantchester.

What is Rivals about?

Rivals is a raunchy drama set in the fictional rural county of Rutshire in the 1980s. The adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s 1988 novel of the same name is about the intense rivalry between television station owner Tony and charismatic former Olympian and Conservative MP Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell).

The rich men regularly clash over money and women, but they are willing to go to war over the television company Corinium Television.

With the future of Corinium Television at stake, the two are at odds and both are determined to emerge victorious.

Missing panties, threesomes and Inbetweeners bedroom bloopers… Emily Atack’s confessions as star of TV hit Rivals.

Tony owns Corinium and, with the help of his new drama producer Cameron and presenter Declan O’Hara (Aiden Turner), hopes it will be enough to emerge victorious.

But fast-paced action in the bedroom and boardroom creates an unpredictable plot, so anything can happen.

Rivals’ all-star cast also includes EastEnders star Danny Dyer, The Inbetweeners alum Emily Atack, W1A’s Rufus Jones, Our Girl’s Luke Pasqualino and Sex Education’s Bella Maclean.

The series, which premiered today (October 18) on Disney+, has already received dozens of rave reviews calling it “amazing.”

David Tennant’s career highlights

David Tennant has become one of Britain’s most prolific actors with countless films and television shows under his belt.

His most notable roles include his portrayal of the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who, in which he appeared regularly between 2007 and 2010.

He proved popular with fans and returned to play the character again in both 2013 and 2023.

One of David’s most celebrated and well-known roles was as DI Alec Hardy in the ITV crime series Broadchurch.

The show ran between 2013 and 2017 and was subsequently nominated for and won numerous top TV gongs.

In recent years he appeared in three series of the show Staged before portraying Alexander Litvinenko in the ITV1 dramatization Litvinenko.

Another fan raved: “Rivals is everything I expected and more!” ’80s hair, music and debauchery! I love it!”

With reviews like these, it’s no wonder that there’s already talk of a second season.

Nothing has been confirmed yet, but a TV insider teased that “there’s so much more to the story.”

Season 1 of Rivals is now available to stream on Disney+.
