Bulgaria has reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic bird flu in poultry, the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) said, as Europe faces a seasonal surge in the deadly disease.

The spread of avian influenza, commonly called avian influenza, has raised concerns among governments and the poultry industry after devastating flocks around the world in recent years, disrupting supplies, driving up food prices and raising the risk of transmission people has increased.

The H5N1 virus was discovered in a flock of 7,669 poultry in the village of Maritsa and caused the deaths of 764 birds, Paris-based WOAH said, citing a report from Bulgarian authorities.
