Pick of the week
Before

Billy Crystal plays (somewhat convincingly) against type in this thriller as child psychologist Eli, a man suffering from the suicide of his wife Lynn. When a mysterious, mute child with bloody hands and a staring stare appears on his doorstep, Eli assumes he dreamed it. But Noah (a chilling turn from Jacobi Jupe) is very real: He is equally drawn to Eli but is unable to explain the roots of his obvious trauma, which manifests itself in incredibly detailed drawings and episodes of harrowing violence. The dialogue is clunky and reminiscent of the horror totems “The Exorcist” and “The Sixth Sense”. But the intriguing central premise makes it worth watching.

Beauty in black

All that glitters… (from left) Taylor Polidore Williams as Kimmie and Amber Reign Smith as Rain in Beauty in Black. Photo: Calvin Ashford/Netflix

Tyler Perry’s work has sometimes been criticized for perpetuating negative stereotypes about black life. This glossy drama may not entirely dispel that perception, as it focuses on the gradually intersecting lives of two somewhat all-too-familiar paradigms of black femininity: fiercely competitive pole dancer Kimmie (Taylor Polidore Williams) and wildly successful girl boss Mallory (Crystle Stewart). ). . When Kimmie is given the chance to improve her circumstances, she throws herself into Mallory’s immaculately designed surroundings, with unforeseen consequences for both of them.

Blackshore

Spirited…Lisa Dwan as Fia Lacey in Blackshore. Photo: Madeline Mulqueen/Treasure Entertainment/River Pictures. Photographer: Madeline Mulqueen

DI Fia Lucy first appears in a pub toilet when she breaks a creep’s nose. She’s such a TV police: ambitious, focused to the point of constant rage, and more than a little worried. Like many of these Rozzers before her, she’s back in her hometown, on temporary secondment from Dublin and struggling with the city’s provincial attitude. It’s not the most groundbreaking idea, and the drama that ensues – the search for a missing woman with mental health issues – is no less generic. Nonetheless, Lisa Dwan is a spirited leading lady who makes it easy to get excited about her character, Lucy.

Doctor Odyssey

All aboard…Joshua Jackson as Max Bankman in Doctor Odyssey. Photo: Tina Thorpe/Disney

Another product of Ryan Murphy’s fevered mind, this highly melodramatic medical procedure is set aboard a luxury cruise ship. The film stars Joshua Jackson as Max, the doctor responsible for the safety of the passengers and crew. It’s a harder task than it sounds – predictably, the Odyssey turns out to be an absolute deathtrap of a boat, populated by accident-prone fools. And predictably, Dr. When he’s not saving lives, Max is engaging in an obviously predictable affair with one of his colleagues. Indescribably stupid.

This drama, based on Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, has had a difficult birth. The series was originally slated for Disney+ distribution before they pulled out and let Prime Video take over the series. It’s a lively if unoriginal telling of the story of Nemo (a dashing Shazad Latif), one of the slaves captured and used to build a giant submersible for the villainous British Eastern Company. However, Nemo leads a rebellion and soon he and his renegade band are traveling the oceans, having adventures and plotting revenge.
