“Get their coach fired” – Richard Sherman’s scathing assessment cuts to the chase for New Orleans as Saints fans deliver brutal verdict

“Get their coach fired” – Richard Sherman’s scathing assessment cuts to the chase for New Orleans as Saints fans deliver brutal verdict

NFL legend Richard Sherman couldn’t handle the New Orleans Saints’ miserable first half – and neither could the team’s fans.

“As if they want to fire their coach!” was the Super Bowl winner’s verdict on two opening quarters in which the Saints trailed 16-3.

The first half of Thursday Night Football ended with boos greeting the New Orleans Saints on their home turf in the Superdome.

One fan tweeted: “Spencer Rattler asked, ‘What do we do?’ Even the newbie questions Dennis Allen,” while another added, “Guess they’ve never heard of a Hail Mary.”

With just a few seconds left on the clock, Saints head coach Dennis Allen called a timeout.

Perhaps the chance for an Aaron Rodgers-style throw down the field to breathe life into a lost cause?

No, instead, the Saints came back from halftime and quarterback Spencer Rattler — in only his second start — took a knee in the final moments.

Broadcasters Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit were perplexed: “Another time off, I guess. OK. For what practical reason, tell me,” Michaels said.

“I don’t know.” – Herbstreit replied.

The Saints lost 16-3 in a disastrous first half and it could have been much worse if the Broncos hadn’t scored just nine points on three scoring drives with three field goals.

Shredded on the floor and unable to get anything of their own going on offense, the ridiculous kneeling timeout moment was the final straw for the New Orleans crowd and ultimately for Sherman.

The former Seattle Seahawk achieved legendary status as part of the Super Bowl-winning Legion of Boom defense and saw such an inept defensive performance.

Pro Bowl safety Tyrann Mathieu dropped an interception that hit him in the hands and forced his tongue.

“I’m confused, I’m upset, I’m perplexed,” Sherman said during Amazon Prime’s “Thursday Night Football” halftime show.

“I don’t understand it. They don’t want to attack, they don’t want to make good plays. These are good players. Tyrann Mathieu is a good player, the easiest interception of his life, sending him to 36th, and he drops it!

“I saw guys not making the effort to get to the ball carrier and make tackles. I do not understand that. It looks like they want to fire their coach – that’s the effort they’re playing with.

“Then, Dennis Allen, will you call a timeout so we can watch your quarterback go to his knees? Are you trying to torture Saints fans? They’ll wait by his car after the game!”

Allen entered the week with the sixth-best odds to become the next NFL head coach, having been fired after Robert Saleh became the first, but if Sherman’s charge is anything to go by, time could be running out for the 52-year-old.

The second half was hardly better for the Saints than the first, ultimately losing 33-10 to the Broncos and former coach and New Orleans legend Sean Payton.

The Saints started the season 2-0 and posted the highest point total in the league in wins against the Panthers and Cowboys. But five straight losses followed, capped by the disastrous prime-time loss to the Broncos.

Allen’s team is already facing a lost season as Derek Carr battles an oblique injury while injuries continue to pile up.

Leading receiver Rashid Shaheed was ruled out for the season just hours before the game after the full extent of knee surgery was confirmed, while Paulson Adebo suffered a suspected broken leg during the game.

Rookie fifth-round pick Rattler replaced veteran Carr under center and in his second start he threw for 172 yards and zero touchdowns, “adding” a disastrous fourth-quarter fumble that was returned for a touchdown .

If the result wasn’t humiliating enough from the Saints’ perspective, it came on the night they inducted legendary quarterback Drew Brees into the franchise’s Hall of Fame.

After Brees chatted during the halftime celebration, the scenes in the second half were very different.

Footage of fans leaving the game with 10 minutes to go circulated on social media, and by the end, the Superdome, which will host the Super Bowl in February, was packed with excited Broncos fans.

After the game, Allen told local media that he wasn’t “worried” about his job, but only time will tell whether or not he is the future of the New Orleans Saints.
