Will Dhruv Jurel bat in the third innings despite Rishabh Pant’s injury scare? Here you will find everything you need to know

Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was injured in the first Test match against New Zealand. While holding wickets on the second day, he was hit on the kneecap of the same leg on which he had undergone surgery after his road accident and it was a precautionary measure to take him off the field.

Pant was hit on the right knee, which resulted in him leaving the field in the 37th over. A delivery from Ravindra Jadeja turned around, stayed slightly low and hit Pant on the leg where he had previously undergone surgery. Pant was replaced by Dhruv Jurel.

Will Jurel bat instead of Pant?

In 2018, there was a major change in the rules of Test cricket. According to the new rule, if a wicketkeeper gets injured during a Test match, the umpire will allow a substitute player to be brought onto the field taking into consideration his injury. Due to this rule, Dhruv Jurel will take over wicketkeeping in place of Pant. However, the substitute cannot play the role of captain and bowler. He can only play the role of a wicketkeeper. This is why Dhruv Jurel cannot bat in his place if Pant is not fit by India’s second innings.

Rohit Sharma on Rishabh Pant’s injury

After the second day match between India and New Zealand, Indian captain Rohit Sharma revealed that he had injured the same leg on which he underwent surgery.

“Yes, unfortunately the ball hit his kneecap directly. The same leg he had surgery on. So he has a little swelling.”

“At this point the muscles are tender. So it is a precautionary measure. You know, he had major surgery on that leg. That was the reason for him to go in. Hopefully he can recover,” he added.

Rishabh Pant is also missing for the third day and the BCCI medical team is monitoring him closely. Dhruv Jurel has been stationed behind the wickets in place of the injured Rishabh.
