AAA reminds Alabam residents to watch out for deer this fall

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Many people in Alabama are familiar with the sight of their headlights reflecting in the eyes of deer late at night or early in the morning.

The cool temperatures cause the deer to become even more active. The animals tend to move around a lot at night, posing a serious danger to drivers.

According to a 2022 study, about 2 million deer-related accidents occur each year, injuring about 59,000 people and killing 440 people.

AAA’s Clay Ingram emphasized that stressed drivers need to put their phones away and pay attention to the road while driving.

He said depending on their size, these animals could also cause serious damage to cars.

“You can completely destroy your car if you hit a deer,” Ingram said. “Sometimes it’s almost like hitting a tree or a wall or something. It causes a lot more damage than you think because some of these deer are pretty big and pretty heavy.”

According to the study, these accidents cause more than $10 billion in economic losses every year.

Ingram added that most insurance policies cover deer-related accidents. However, drivers need to take a look at their policies to confirm.
