1 shot behind Islamic School of Portland, suspect faces attempted murder, assault charges

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – One person was shot behind the Portland Islamic School Thursday afternoon.

Police say the suspected shooter is in custody and has been identified as 42-year-old Noureddine Dib of Beaverton.

The shooting occurred in the West Portland Park neighborhood of Southwest Portland around 2:23 p.m

Central Precinct officers responded to reports of a shooting involving two men in the 10200 block of Southwest Capitol Highway. When they arrived, officers found an injured man. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Officers learned that the accused shooter had entered the Portland Islamic School, but fortunately he exited the building and was taken into custody without incident.

On Wednesday, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Department held its 21st annual domestic violence warrant search in October.

Additional officers conducted a thorough search of the school to ensure everyone was safe and recovered a weapon.

Their preliminary investigation revealed that the two men knew each other and had a connection to the school and the nearby mosque. Officers also determined that the shooting occurred in the parking lot at the top of a stairwell behind the school and not inside the school itself.

PPB Chief Bob Day released a statement regarding the shooting.

“Today there was a shooting between two people who knew each other near an Islamic school and mosque. To be clear, this shooting was not a school shooting or a bias crime. Events like these are evidence of the urgent need for our strong partnership with the Muslim community. I am grateful to the members of the PPB Muslim Advisory Council for their continued support and direct commitment to the safety and well-being of the community.”

The PPB command and supervisors have been in contact with officials from the mosque, the school and members of the PPB Muslim Advisory Council.

PPB’s Enhanced Community Safety Team (ECST) responded to the scene to continue the investigation.

Around 7:30 p.m., police said Dib was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center and was charged with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful discharge of a firearm
