Itasca County Commissioner dies, leaving his name on the ballot for the Nov. 5 election

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. (Northern News Now) – We’re learning more about what’s next after one of the candidates running for Itasca County Commissioner dies.

Michael “Burl” Ives passed away in September. He was 57 years old and had already served as Commissioner of the Fourth District at the time of his death.

He was also a local businessman. His colleagues say he was committed to the betterment of his constituents and Itasca County and served as commissioner with dignity and integrity.

Since he is seeking re-election, Ives will continue to appear on the November ballot.

If Ives ends up winning next month by receiving more votes than challenger Brian Oftelie, that would trigger a special election.

According to district leaders, exactly when that will happen depends on how many candidates enter the race.
