Phoenix police say man’s self-defense claims in fatal shooting are unfounded

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Phoenix police arrested a suspect, days after a shooting left another man dead and a woman injured.

Investigators said 49-year-old Refugio Jimenez was taken into custody and was wearing body armor.

Police also said he had methamphetamine on him and stole a gun.

During the following interview with investigators, Jimenez said the shooting was self-defense, but police said evidence found at the scene did not support that claim.

The shooting happened just before 1 a.m. Monday near 13th Avenue and Sunland Avenue, which is north of Southern Avenue.

According to police, a fight outside an apartment escalated and Jimenez shot and killed 29-year-old Rashaad Johnson and a 32-year-old woman.

Johnson died at the scene. The woman was taken to hospital where she survived.

It is unclear what led to the fight.

Jimenez was booked into prison on nine felony charges, including murder, second-degree burglary, weapons and drug charges.
