Teenage driver dies in head-on crash in front of school; Sister, teacher hospitalized with serious injuries

WAYNE TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WXIX/Gray News) – An Ohio school district is mourning after a student died in a serious accident this week.

According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, the student was involved in a head-on collision on West Elkton Road Thursday morning.

The 16-year-old was behind the wheel of a 2005 Pontiac when the vehicle suddenly turned left and struck an oncoming 2013 Chevrolet Suburban.

The teenage driver was pronounced dead at the scene and his 13-year-old sister, who was also in the car, suffered life-threatening injuries. She was flown to Dayton Children’s Hospital for treatment.

The SUV driver was 60-year-old Kevin Johnson, a social studies teacher at Edgewood City Schools. He also suffered serious injuries in the accident and was taken to Miami Valley Hospital.

Authorities said the 16-year-old and his sister were on their way to their father’s house that morning to get ready for school.

“We will have counselors and support staff available for any student who wants to speak or needs help coping with this tragedy,” said Todd Bowling, superintendent of Preble Shawnee Local Schools. “We will not be making a formal announcement to the entire student body, but we will provide support as needed.”

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

The sheriff’s office did not immediately identify the 16-year-old driver or his 13-year-old sister.
