Georgia school shooting suspect, father charged with dozens of charges including murder

ATLANTA, Ga. (WANF/Gray News) – A grand jury has returned dozens of indictments against the son and father both charged in connection with the fatal shooting at Apalachee High School last month.

14-year-old Colt Gray faces 55 charges, including charges of aggravated murder, premeditated murder and aggravated assault for each of the four people killed.

According to investigators, Gray brought an AR-style rifle to school in a backpack and later opened fire, killing two students and two teachers and wounding nine others on Sept. 4.

Gray’s father, 54-year-old Colin Gray, also faces 29 counts, including second-degree murder, second-degree cruelty to children, involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct.

Police say he knowingly gave his son access to the gun allegedly used in the shooting.

Police said Colt will be tried as an adult. He and his father are expected to be tried separately.

Her next court date will be November 21st.

The victims of the shooting were 14-year-old students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, math teacher Cristina Irimie and soccer coach and teacher Richard Aspinwall.

A hearing for Colin on Wednesday revealed many new details about the case.

Investigators said they found a notebook in which Colt meticulously planned the shooting and noted the estimated number of dead and injured per hallway and classroom. He also allegedly had what authorities called a “shrine” for school shooters in his room.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Colt asked his father for several rifle accessories, such as a tactical vest, a laser sight and a mask. Authorities said Colt used most of them during the school shooting.

The GBI also said Colt’s family discussed taking him to a counselor, but none of the plans came to fruition.
