A Texas school janitor is accused of using AI to create child porn using real students’ faces

ANSON, TEXAS (KVII) – A Texas school janitor is accused of using artificial intelligence to create child pornography using the faces of real students.

Daril Martin Gonzales, 55, was arrested last week and charged with one count of possession and attempted possession of child pornography and one count of possession and attempted possession of an obscene visual representation of a child.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Gonzales, who works as a custodian for Anson ISD near Abilene, moonlighted as a school sports and cheerleading photographer, taking photos of middle and high school students for free.

Prosecutors said he used AI to superimpose the faces of prepubescent students on the faces of adults in sexually explicit videos. They said Gonzales also attached AI-generated naked bodies to the girls’ faces.

Police have seized at least six AI-altered videos and three photos:

• :49 Video of men and women having sex. Victim #1’s face was superimposed over the woman’s body.
• :59 Video of a naked woman placing an object on her genitals from various positions. Victim #2’s face was superimposed over the woman’s body.
• :58 Video of men and women having sex. Victim #3’s face was superimposed over the woman’s body.
• :59 Video of men and women having sex. Victim #4’s face was placed on the woman’s body.
• :59 Video of men and women having sex. Victim #5’s face was superimposed over the woman’s body. The video appears to show a minor between the ages of 8 and 12 having sexual intercourse with an adult man.
• 1:00 video of men and women having sex. Victim #6’s face was superimposed over the woman’s body.
• Photo of victim #7’s face with an AI-generated naked body. Gonzales altered and adapted the victim’s body from clothed to a lascivious display of her genitals and pubic area.
• Photo of victim #8’s face with an AI-generated naked body. Gonzales altered and adapted the victim’s body from clothed to a lascivious display of her genitals and pubic area.
• Photo of victim #9’s face with an AI-generated naked body. Gonzales altered and adapted the victim’s body from clothed to a lascivious display of her genitals and pubic area.

According to a police report, Gonzales described his crimes as a “power trip” and admitted to watching child pornography for up to six hours a day for the past 20 to 25 years.

“I knew he took it [photographs] and what he does with it really makes me sick,” said one victim in late August after being informed about the AI ​​images. “I feel disgusting, I know I’m not, but it makes me feel disgusting and hurt and disrespected.”

“I felt disgusted, embarrassed and scared. I was afraid that photos of me would be posted or sold somewhere,” said another. “I was embarrassed because I didn’t want people to think that way about me even though I hadn’t done anything.”

“I know I can’t do anything about what he did,” said a third. “I don’t think I did anything wrong. He’s in the wrong.”

If convicted, Gonzales faces up to 20 years in federal prison, followed by a lifetime of supervised release.
