Halloween Spending: Tips to Stop Your Bank Account From Getting a Scare | News

Wis. (WJFW)- Halloween is just two weeks away and many people are getting the decorations ready, preparing costumes and making sure they have enough candy for trick-or-treaters. The National Retail Federation estimates that about 72% of people will celebrate Halloween this year.

“You want to be able to use your money wisely and stick to a certain amount of money and a certain budget,” said Lisa Schiller, spokeswoman for the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau.

The National Retail Federation estimates $11.6 billion will be spent on Halloween. But there are ways to avoid spending too much on the popular holiday.

“Look around your home, look in your closet. If you want to sew your own costume, there are definitely things in there that you didn’t know you had that you can put together to make a really great costume and save some money and save some more space ” said Schiller.

The National Retail Federation estimates that an average of $104 is spent per person. Costumes and decorations top the list at $3.8 billion, followed by candy at $3.5 billion.

“Set a budget, know how much you want to spend, sit down and write it down if that helps you,” Schiller said. “How much are you willing to spend on candy can really add up and if you buy it in bulk you can potentially save a lot of money.”

Schiller also said that when purchasing items online, it is important to review the site’s privacy policy and always use a credit card instead of a debit card to provide additional protection.

“A lot of times people will Google whatever they’re looking for, maybe a particular costume, and the first or second website that opens they click on and move on, and that’s not the way you need to do business “You definitely have to do it.” “You know who you’re dealing with,” said Schiller.

If you also have leftover candy, you can donate it to your local food pantry.
