Cowley County worker remains hospitalized after mowing accident

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A Cowley County employee who was seriously injured in a mowing accident Monday afternoon remains hospitalized in Wichita after being flown by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center.

Cowley County Administrator Lucas Goff told 12 News Thursday morning the man is still in Wesley, but the family hopes he will be moved to long-term care and rehab next week.

Goff did not release the worker’s name but said he was a man in his 50s.

The man was with a team of two other county employees mowing the road near the intersection of 162nd and 281st streets – or about four miles east of the Dexter Y interchange.

Goff said the tractor was driving over a flood plain and when the tire fell in, the tractor – a new purchase for the county with a mower attachment – rolled down a 30-foot embankment several times.

The driver was thrown from the cab of the tractor.

Goff said his colleagues responded immediately. The Rural Fire Department was first on scene, followed shortly after by the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office and Winfield EMS.
