A school bus accident in Steuben County sends a five-year-old to the hospital

A female driver has been handed three traffic fines for her involvement in a school bus crash that sent a five-year-old to hospital.

According to New York State Police, troopers responded to a collision involving a school bus on State Route 417 in the town of Erwin on Wednesday, October 16th.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a 2018 Dodge, driven by 40-year-old Leanna A. Byler, was traveling east on State Route 417 when it failed to stop to catch a 2018 Addison Central school bus . The Dodge then crashed into the rear of another vehicle that was stopped for the school bus. The vehicle then crashed into the school bus.

The driver of the bus and all six teenage passengers were not injured. A 5-year-old passenger in one of the vehicles was transported via LifeNet to Strong Memorial Hospital and is in stable condition.

Byler was not injured in the accident and was issued three traffic violations that will be returned to Erwin Town Court.
