Arvada Fire wins first charity softball game against Arvada Police Department

Arvada firefighters will have some bragging rights over their police counterparts for the foreseeable future, as the Arvada Fire Protection District defeated the Arvada Police Department by a score of 15-12 in the pair’s first charity softball matchup.

In addition to the main event, the start of the day featured a junior varsity duel between police and firefighters, games between the Water Hawks and Sewer Stallions (made up of employees from the city’s public works department), and folks from the Apex Parks Department The city’s parks team handled leisure and recreation.

The undercard games were played tournament style. All games were played at the Youth Memorial Sports Complex. The games were organized by the Arvada Vitality Alliance along with a number of sponsors including the City of Arvada, Bambei Brewing and Umps Care Charities.

Brady Johnston, public information officer for the Arvada Fire Protection District, said the department is excited to be a part of the first police vs. fire softball game.

“We are proud to boast about our first response partners,” said Johnston. “This was a fantastic launch event and we were grateful to be a part of it. More important than the score, this event was all about charity and the community that makes Arvada special.”

Also joining in the festivities were Colorado Rockies mascot Dinger, who hugged the players and gave them words of encouragement.

“This was an incredible event, not only an opportunity for friendly competition with colleagues and friends, but most importantly a way to raise funds for a charity that directly impacts the people of Arvada,” said APD Commander Jason Ammon.

The event raised over $10,000 for charity.
