On Thursday, a babysitter was arrested in a dog attack that killed a 1-year-old and faced a civil hearing

SAN ANTONIO — The babysitter was arrested after her dogs attacked her daughter, and a 1-year-old boy under the woman’s care will face civil court Thursday for a dangerous dogs hearing.

Thursday’s case is not the criminal case in which 36-year-old Heather Rodriguez faces multiple charges.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office filed two new charges against Rodriguez last week. She is charged with injury to a child – reckless assault and endangerment of a child, imminent danger – causing bodily harm, the sheriff’s office said in an email Wednesday morning.

The new charges stem from Rodriguez leaving her 13-year-old daughter alone with the baby, BCSO said.

On Oct. 8, the day before the new charges were filed, Rodriguez was arrested and charged with injury to a child with serious bodily injury after two dogs broke in through a bedroom door at her home and killed her 13-year-old daughter and 1. had attacked a one-year-old baby that Rodriguez left behind with the teenager.

The child, Jiryiah Johnson, died Oct. 8 as a result of injuries sustained, the Bexar County coroner confirmed.

Rodriguez has not yet been charged in the criminal case and is not scheduled to appear in court until she is charged or her attorney requests a pre-arraignment hearing.
