When your daughter makes a new friend, it’s hard not to treat her as one of your own.

But when a mother gave hair care tips to the parents of her daughter’s friend, things got even worse.

Now she wonders if she’s crossed a line.

Read on for the story!

My daughter (9) recently found a new friend. The friend is adopted, she is black and her parents are white.

We’ve had her at home a lot over the last few months and have noticed that her parents don’t really know how to care for her hair.

I am white and my husband is mixed. His black grandmother lives with us and she pointed out the girl’s hair and even tried to give her some hair care tips.

This feels risky.

I decided to talk to the mother about her daughter’s hair and tell her that my husband’s grandma would be happy to give advice or even wash, untangle and braid her hair.

The mother was really upset that I suggested that she couldn’t properly care for her daughter and that I was overstepping boundaries.

I told her that my grandmother-in-law just wanted to help her help her daughter.

She told me I was being rude and undermining her parenting. She also told me that I wasn’t the first person to bring this up.

Well… I wonder why.

I’m worried now because I really didn’t think she would react like that. I’m worried I’ve ruined my daughter’s new friendship.

I understand why she’s upset that I’m implying that she’s not taking proper care of her daughter.

Then again, it’s 2024.

There is so much information that can help her with her daughter’s hair. We also live near a big city where there are plenty of salons she could take her daughter to.

AITA, that you brought this up? I feel bad about how things turned out.

The mother just wanted to help (or give a hairbrush), but the conversation escalated into accusations of crossing the line.

Now she’s wondering if she’s really wrong – or if this is a sensitive topic that no one wants to talk about.

The people of Reddit have spoken and the verdict? NTA.

This person says it’s the mother’s job to be proud of her daughter and her hair care.

This person thinks they are simply ignorant.

Come on…

Offering hair tips shouldn’t cause a rift in friendships, right?
