Police are still searching for suspects in the July block party shooting on Detroit’s east side

DETROIT — Police are still searching for those responsible for killing two people and wounding 19 others in a shooting at a block party in July.

background

The shooting occurred just before 2:30 a.m. on July 7, 2024, at a block party in the area of Reno Street and Rossini Drive.

There were no arrests.

Neighbors said around 350 people were present.

Video from a nearby house showed a crowd crowding around a few women during a fight. Moments later, people could be seen running for their lives as shots were fired into the crowd. At least 100 bullet casings were found at the scene.

Police released surveillance images of a group seen walking toward the crowd shortly before the shooting. However, they still need clues to identify the people of interest in this group.

A relative of the victim demands answers

Three months after the shooting, the family of one of the slain victims is still haunted by the tragic incident.

“We are broken,” Gamerise Young said during a press conference at Crime Stoppers of Michigan on Oct. 16. “You ruined us! Help us get justice.”

The pain Young is feeling right now is palpable.

“I’m still waiting for my son to come home,” Young said. “But he’s never coming back!”

The grieving mother’s spirit is still reeling as the family continues to search for answers to the mass shooting that killed Young’s son.

21-year-old Phillip Arnold Jr. was shot while trying to help others. A 20-year-old woman was also killed that night.

“How could you think so little of life,” cried Young. “You take a life I gave? It wasn’t yours to take! It wasn’t yours to take!”

Family members said they hadn’t received many updates from police. They said they asked questions and interviewed people independently, without success.

“It doesn’t matter if you didn’t mean to shoot him,” Young said. “You did! You got this! Along with 20 other people. How do you do that?”

Ongoing investigation

Crime Stoppers of Michigan is now offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest.

The organization and Arnold’s family urge the community to report tips to Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. Tips can be left anonymously.
