Titans vs. Bills scouting report, betting line, score prediction

If reputation and perception were the only things that mattered, this wouldn’t be remotely the case.

The Tennessee Titans (1-4) face the Buffalo Bills (4-2) at Highmark Stadium on Sunday (12 p.m. CT, CBS) in one of the AFC’s all-time bests against a Titans team that is in the first year of its coaching career struggling to find his identity Brian Callahan’s partnership with quarterback Will Levis.

If you put the names and trajectories aside, things look a little fairer. The Bills’ offense got off to a relatively slow start – at least statistically – but more than made up for its efficiency issues by dominating in the red zone and limiting turnovers. The Titans’ defense is No. 1 in yards allowed per game per play, due in large part to their red zone dominance and the fact that they don’t force many turnovers. This makes for an interesting matchup.

Still, it’s hard to imagine the Titans being successful without a massive turnaround on offense, whether by letting go of Levis and trying to find more success through the air or by relying on a fast-paced game that relies on Running back Tony Pollard is based.

The Titans’ highest-volume players have been struggling lately

Here is The Tennessean’s scouting report and score prediction for Sunday’s game.

Tennessee Titans offense vs. Buffalo Bills defense: Can Will Levis step up?

The Bills’ defense is allowing 5.3 yards per carry, the most in the NFL this season. Callahan hasn’t been afraid to develop game plans around Pollard and the rushing attack lately. So don’t be surprised if this trend repeats itself.

Let’s be fair: The Bills’ run defense was about league average in games that didn’t come against Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry and the Baltimore Ravens. Because as well as Pollard has been playing lately, this rushing attack is not Baltimore’s. Levis and the passing attack will need to make something happen to remain competitive, and that could be a challenge considering how well Buffalo’s secondary has played all season.

Advantage: buffalo

Tennessee Titans Defense vs. Buffalo Bills Offense: How quickly can Josh Allen and Amari Cooper get things going?

Give the Bills offense credit: This unit scores touchdowns. Although the Bills rank middle of the pack or worse in most yards per game and per play category, 24th in third-down conversion rate, 23rd in plays per drive, and 23rd in drive percentage, finishing 15th in points, the Bills still have the No. 7 scoring offense in the NFL. The fact that Josh Allen has yet to throw an interception helps, as does the fact that the Bills are third in the league in average starting field position.

The real question is how the Bills’ offense will change with the acquisition of star receiver Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns. Prior to Week 6, the Titans had not allowed a touchdown to a wide receiver. They allow significantly fewer passing yards per game and play than any other NFL team.

But that also includes games against three backup quarterbacks and a rookie making his first NFL start. That’s hardly the pedigree of a quarterback like Allen playing MVP-caliber ball. But the matchup is still intriguing.

Advantage: Tennessee, on the edge

Betting lines Titans vs. Bills

The Bills open as 9-point favorites over the Titans, according to BetMGM. You can bet on the Bills’ moneyline at -450 and the Titans’ moneyline at +350. The over-under point spread is set at 41.5 points.

Tennessee Titans Predictions

Offensive Player of the Game: Pollard. With accomplice Tyjae Spears under attack, this is likely to be a complete Pollard game. At least that means he has the opportunity to make plays.

Defensive Player of the Game: L’Jarius Sneed. The big-money cornerback didn’t have his best game in Week 6 against the Colts, but he’s the type of guy who’s primed to bounce back against a tough opponent, a situation in which he’s in been successful throughout his career.

Surprise Titan of the Game: Ryan Stonehouse. The Titans’ most dangerous special teams weapon started to look like himself again in Week 6. Don’t be surprised if he makes a big difference this week.

Score Prediction: Buffalo Bills 20, Tennessee Titans 13

Unless the Titans’ offense proves it is a threat, it’s hard to imagine the results being any different. The Bills are really good at home. Allen is a completely different caliber of quarterback than the Titans have faced all year. And it’s hard to predict this team going to Buffalo and pulling off the upset when the Bills have played pretty well in close games and the Titans just haven’t.
