Two people were injured in a three-vehicle, high-speed crash on I-95 near the 68 mile mark southbound Saturday morning, October 12th. The accident occurred on the Edisto River bridge and blocked all southbound traffic. A semi-trailer truck collided with a delivery truck, causing the semi-trailer to skid on the bridge. The semi-truck then crashed into a Toyota pickup, causing severe damage and pushing the pickup into the side of the bridge. Both occupants of the pickup sustained non-life-threatening, multiple traumatic injuries and were trapped in the debris. A small dog that was also in the truck was not injured. The accident brought traffic on the interstate to a standstill, requiring Colleton County fire rescue units to respond to oncoming traffic on the interstate and travel north in the southbound lanes for approximately three-quarters of a mile to reach the scene. Traffic came to a standstill as the accident blocked all southbound lanes. A LaSalle County Texas Fire-Rescue firefighter-paramedic battalion chief and a trauma surgeon from Spartanburg were already providing aid to the injured. The Texas firefighters were part of a team returning from assisting victims of Hurricane Helene. Colleton crews salvage tools to remove the driver’s door and free the adult female driver. Both patients and the dog were transported to Colleton Medical Center. There was also an accident in the northbound lane just before the Northbound 68 exit, causing a small traffic jam. All vehicles were able to leave the road. The Dorchester County Fire Department and EMS also responded and provided assistance at the scene. Southbound traffic was blocked for several hours, reversing past St. George. The SC Highway Patrol and State Transportation Police are investigating the accident.
