SUGAR LAND, Texas (KTRK) — A man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a crash that left a police officer critically injured in 2022, according to Sugar Land police.

Julian Requena, 27, was charged with two counts of assault while under the influence of alcohol after a collision with then-25-year-old Sugar Land police officer Ruben Munoz.

On March 20, 2022, at approximately 2 a.m., Munoz responded to a single-vehicle accident on US-59 near Highway 90 and was blocking traffic in his patrol car when he was struck.

According to authorities, Munoz was unconscious and stuck in his patrol car.

Munoz was transported into the HOV lane by two Sugar Land Police Department officers who, with the assistance of two good Samaritans, helped break down the back door of the patrol car.

Officers performed CPR on Munoz until paramedics arrived at the scene.

According to law enforcement, Munoz is back at work after several surgeries.
