“I probably shouldn’t be up here.”

Saturday Night Live has long been at the center of the culture wars, but since Donald Trump was the guest host, they haven’t courted controversy as aggressively as they did this weekend.

Former cast member Shane Gillis (total on-air appearances: zero) hosted this week, and considering how many people were interested in what he had to say about his firing, surprisingly little was said.

Gillis was originally announced as a new addition SNL Starring in 2019, along with Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang. Until excerpts from a podcast appearance made the rounds – in which he dealt intensively with racism against Asians, transphobia and misogyny. More clips surfaced and the show withdrew its offer. Since then, his career has blossomed, including stand-up specials on YouTube and Netflix.

“I was fired from this show a while ago. Don’t look this up. Please,” he joked at the start of his speech SNL Host’s monologue. “If you don’t know who I am, please don’t google this, it’s fine! Don’t worry about it.”

He went on to joke that he probably shouldn’t be there, but beyond that, nothing of the previous controversy was ever mentioned.

Gillis’ material focused largely on his family – after making fun of him for looking like a high school sports coach, he introduced the audience to his father, who original is a high school coach. He spoke about his mother, who was also in attendance, and her family’s history with Down syndrome, including how they had opened a cafe to employ people with developmental disabilities.

Some jokes fell flat – most notably one in which he confronted his niece about Down syndrome – and the audience’s reaction was mostly muted, leading to the rueful remark: “I don’t have any material that’s shown on TV can be.”

Saturday at 11:40pm in front of a live audience is a damn good time to find out The out of.

Watch the monologue above, then weigh in on this weekend’s events SNL Hosted by Shane Gillis and featuring musical guest 21 Savage.
