In the years after Liam Payne found fame on The X Factor, his personal life became complicated at times and he spoke openly about his struggles with alcoholism and mental health. He was also diagnosed with ADHD as an adult.

In a candid television interview with former SAS soldier Ant Middleton in 2019, he spoke about his battle with suicidal thoughts: “In certain circumstances I’m very lucky to still be here.”

“There are times when you engage in such a level of loneliness and people every day, you wonder, ‘When will this end?’ That almost killed me a few times,” he said.

In July 2023, he also commented on social media that there were “a lot of manic things in my life” and that he had gotten help from specialists.

He described hitting “rock bottom” after appearing drunk on Logan Paul’s podcast in June 2022 – which led to backlash over his controversial comments about his One Direction bandmates, for which he later apologized.

In July 2023, Payne also commented on YouTube – he thanked his ex-partner Cheryl Cole, also mother of their child Bear, for supporting his decision to seek treatment. He described how his former bandmates “stood by me” and “came to my aid.”

The relationship with Cheryl began in 2016, but the two separated in 2018.

Liam has been romantically linked to a number of women over the years, including models Naomi Campbell in 2019 and then Maya Henry, who he got engaged to in 2019. The couple had a three-year on-off relationship that ended in 2022.

He has been in a relationship with influencer Kate Cassidy since October 2022 and they only took photos together in London in June.

But in a sign of his complex personal life, his ex-fiancée Maya Henry launched legal action on Monday, instructing lawyers to issue a cease-and-desist letter to Liam.

She posted a video on TikTok in which she claimed that the One Direction star repeatedly sent her unwanted messages.

And last week the Sun reported that Liam had parted ways with his management company and put plans for a second solo album on hold.
