How to vote in the November 5 DC general election

Who can vote in the DC primary election?

D.C. residents who will be at least 18 years old by November 5, 2024 will be eligible to vote in the general election.

Who can register to vote?

Both US citizens and non-US citizens can register to vote. To register you must:

  • be at least 17 years old (you can vote in the general election if you are at least 18 years old by November 5, 2024);
  • have applied for residency in the District of Columbia for at least 30 days immediately before the election;
  • do not claim residency or be registered as a voter anywhere else;
  • has not been found by a court to be legally incapable of voting.

District residents who are U.S. citizens and 16 years of age may pre-register to vote (but may not vote in the primary until the year they turn 18 on the day of the general election).

Incarcerated D.C. residents can also register to vote, even if they are being held outside the District. The District of Columbia Board of Elections is required to provide voter registration materials to DC residents incarcerated in the custody of the DC Department of Corrections and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

If you are a US citizensn, You can register to vote or update your registration by October 15th in one of the following ways:

  • with registration form. You can obtain a registration form online, at the DC Board of Elections office, or at most DC public libraries. Submit your completed form by mail (DC Board of Elections, 1015 Half St SE #750, Washington, DC 20003), in person, by fax (202-347-2648), or by email ([email protected]).

If yes not a US citizenYou can register to vote or update your registration by October 15th in one of the following ways:

  • online here;
  • with registration form. You can obtain a registration form online, at the DC Board of Elections office, or at most DC public libraries. Submit your completed form by mail (DC Board of Elections, 1015 Half St SE #750, Washington, DC 20003), in person, by fax (202-347-2648), or by email ([email protected]).

If you miss the October 15th deadline, both US citizens and non-citizens You can register if you vote during early voting (October 28 – November 3) or on Election Day (November 5). Simply bring proof of residency in Washington (see acceptable documents for citizens here and for non-citizens here) when you go to vote.

If yes locked up in the DC JailYou can register to vote or update your registration in any of the following ways:
