The mother of the victim of a Detroit block party shooting wants answers

DETROIT (WXYZ) — It’s been three months since the largest mass shooting in Michigan’s recent history.

This summer, more than two dozen people were shot at a Detroit block party that police never legalized. Two people died as a result of the shooting.

Watch our coverage of the violent weekend that left three people dead and two dozen others injured in the video below:

Three people died and 24 were injured during illegal block parties across Detroit over the Fourth of July weekend

Now the mother of one of those victims is speaking out, pleading with the community to talk about what happened that fateful night.

“You took away the life I gave,” Gamerise Young said through tears. “It wasn’t your job. It wasn’t your decision.”

Young’s son, Phillip Arnold Jr., was murdered at an unsanctioned block party in July.

“We are broken. “You ruined us,” she said.

Arnold was one of 21 people shot dead at the party after someone fired into a crowd.

His mother said no one has come forward with information about the shooting, so she turned to Crime Stoppers to ask the community for help.

“Help us get justice. Help me tell my boys that people who hurt their brother won’t hurt anyone else,” Young said while standing at the Crime Stoppers podium.

The shooting is one of many shootings that occurred over the summer during a series of illegal block parties that turned violent.

In September, I brought all the families of the block party victims together with Detroit Police Chief James White because they said no one was taking care of them.

The department launched a program called FAMLE, an expanded unit within the homicide unit specifically designed to stay in touch with families about their loved one’s murder cases.

Watch the September story about the new entity in the video below:

After Young spoke at Crime Stoppers on Wednesday, I sat down with her for the first time since the new unit was announced.

“My expectations are a little different than other families,” she said. “I don’t expect to be called every week, every two weeks, every three weeks just because you’ve figured out so much in that time. What’s changed since last time?”

Young said she strongly believes the “no snitch” mentality has a lot to do with why her son’s case remains unsolved.

“I know your mentality that you don’t want to betray. “You don’t want to tell,” she said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the FAMLE program at 313-596-2260 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
