Payne was in Buenos Aires at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel at the time of his death. He reportedly fell from his room on the 3rd^approx Floor. There is still no evidence as to whether his death was intentional or accidental. Payne had been in Argentina for a Niall Horan concert, where his One Direction bandmates reunited at the show.

Witnesses reported that Payne had been acting erratically in the hotel lobby earlier in the day, that the singer had broken his laptop and needed help getting back to his room. Paramedics in Argentina confirmed to local news channels that Payne was already dead when they arrived at the scene.

Payne was 16 when he formed One Direction with Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. The band formed during the show The X Factor in 2010. One Direction went on hiatus in 2016.

In 2021, Payne admitted that he struggled with both alcohol and medication addictions during his time in the band. Earlier this week, Payne’s ex-fiancée Maya Henry claimed that Payne left her after asking her to have an abortion. The singer is survived by son Bear Gray and his former daughter Cheryl Cole.
