TBI Forensic Scientist Fired for ‘Unethical Conduct’; The Shelby Co. District Attorney is calling for a reexamination of the evidence

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has fired a forensic scientist at its testing lab in Jackson, Tennessee – a decision that prompted Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy to re-examine the original evidence analyzed by him to apply to employees.

Mulroy says the worker was fired for “unethical behavior.” According to TBI, the termination was due to concerns about the forensic scientist’s personal life and behavior.

The agency said the decision had nothing to do with the quality of the scientist’s casework.

The TBI said the employee’s open cases were reviewed and steps were taken to complete the review of his evidence.

Prosecutor Mulroy says many of this scientist’s cases came from Shelby County, including cases of rape and sexual abuse.

The prosecutor asked TBI to re-examine evidence from these cases for witness purposes.

According to the TBI, there have been three requests to date to revise the evidence originally analyzed by this forensic scientist.

Assistant District Attorney Paul Hagerman said, “We need to disclose the problems to defense attorneys and, if possible, we need to repeat the tests and have another scientist testify in court.”

In a post to X on the issue Wednesday, Mulroy reiterated his call for a forensic testing lab in Memphis.
