Former One Direction singer Liam Payne has died after falling from his hotel balcony in Argentina, according to multiple reports. He was 31.

According to Argentine newspaper La Nación, police were called to the CasaSur Hotel in the Palermo district after reports that a man was behaving aggressively in the building. According to police, the man was apparently under the influence of alcohol.

Alberto Crescenti, the director of SAME, Argentina’s state emergency medical system, said medical professionals had arrived in the hotel’s courtyard.

He added that police found Payne after he appeared to fall from a height of 12 to 45 feet, causing injuries “incompatible with life,” according to Argentine media outlet TN.

Representatives for Payne did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Payne joined One Direction along with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan during the 2010 British talent show The X Factor. The group took third place in the final.

In November 2011, One Direction released their first album, Up All Night, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. They released another four albums before going on hiatus in 2015 when Malik left the group.

Following the group’s indefinite hiatus in 2016, each group member has established a solo career with varying levels of success. In 2019, Payne released his only album, “LP1.” In March he released the song “Teardrops”.
