The ballot asks Burlington voters to strengthen police oversight

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – For four years, Burlington city councilors have failed to reach consensus on police oversight. But this summer, Democrats and progressives finally agreed on a proposal, and now they’re asking voters to weigh in.

The November vote will focus on whether to give the existing Police Commission more powers, including the possibility of convening a new, independent panel to review cases of officer misconduct. The measure would require an amendment to the city’s charter and would ultimately need to be approved by the Legislature.

Darren Perron spoke with Seven Days’ Courtney Lamdin, who covered the ballot measure in this week’s issue.
