Charlotte man hit by train dies in hospital days after accident

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte man who was hospitalized after being struck by a CSX train has died.

On Wednesday, October 9, at approximately 1:22 p.m., officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a CSX train near Rozzelles Ferr Road. Upon arrival, police discovered an unresponsive man who appeared to have been hit by a train.

Officers also spotted a CSX train nearby. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC responded to the scene. MEDIC transported the pedestrian, identified as 79-year-old Curtis Hayes, to Atrium Health Main with life-threatening injuries. Curtis died from his injuries three days later.

Preliminary investigation indicates Hayes was walking westbound on Honeywood Avenue toward Rozzelles Ferry Road when he was struck by a train.
