The US Navy is searching for two crew members after a plane crashed near Mount Rainier

(CNN) The U.S. Navy is searching for two crew members after their plane crashed near Mount Rainier in Washington on Tuesday during a training flight.

A US Navy EA-18G Growler aircraft assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 130 in Washington crashed east of Mount Rainier on Tuesday afternoon, according to a statement from the Naval Air Forces.

“Several search and rescue personnel, including a U.S. Navy MH-60S helicopter, were launched from NAS Whidbey Island to locate the crew and investigate the crash site,” the release said. “As of 7 p.m. on October 15, the status of the two crew members remains unknown.”

Search and rescue operations were still underway on Wednesday morning.

The EA-18G Growler is an electronic warfare aircraft and a variant of the F/A-18 Super Hornet. The Navy said the crash was under investigation. The unit that includes the Growler recently completed a deployment aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in the Middle East. A July news release said the unit achieved “the first air-to-air kill by a VAQ squadron in Navy history” during the deployment.

“Words cannot describe how proud I am of this ‘Zapper’ team, who performed their duty in combat under incredibly difficult circumstances for months, often not knowing what each day would bring,” said Cmdr. Carl Ellsworth, the squadron’s commanding officer, said in July. “The best of our country is here in VAQ-130.”
