Here’s where to celebrate Day of the Dead in Southern California – Daily News

The annual Day of the Dead celebration returns to give people the opportunity to joyfully remember all those who have died with altars, music, food and a festive atmosphere.

Although it falls on November 1st and 2nd, events take place in October and November. And to help you celebrate, here are a dozen Day of the Dead events in the Southland.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery

When: Oct. 26, 10 a.m.-midnight

Where: 6000 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles

Cost: $53.60 and up

Hollywood Forever’s Día de los Muertos is one of the city’s largest events. So expect thousands of people to stroll through the cemetery throughout the day. Entertainment includes bands like Los Lobos, ranchera star Pedro Fernandez, as well as art exhibits, processions, Aztec dancers and, of course, altars.

Long Beach Dia De Los Muertos Parade

When: November 2nd from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m

Where: Downtown Long Beach

Cost: Free

A parade will parade through downtown Long Beach on Pine Avenue with floats and cultural performances, ending at the Arte y Ofrendas Festival at Rainbow Lagoon.

Mercado La Paloma

When: 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., October 27th

Where: Mercado La Paloma, 3655 South Grand Ave., Los Angeles

Cost: Free

Celebrations at this bustling market and restaurant hall include dancers, live music from artists like Oaxca’s Alejandra Robles, as well as workshops and food for purchase.

Downey Dia de Los Muertos Arts Festival

When: October 27th from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m

Where: Downey Theater Plaza, 8435 Firestone Blvd., Downey

Cost: Free

Around 25,000 people are expected throughout the day to watch Ballet Folklorico performances, listen to live music, hang out in a beer and wine garden, shop at artisan stalls and see traditional artwork from local artists.

Big park

When: Oct. 19 – Nov. 19, 2

Where: 200 N. Grand Ave., Los Angeles

Cost: Free

The 15-day celebration at the park begins at 11 a.m. Oct. 19 and includes live poetry readings, musical performances, Día de los Muertos-inspired workshops, face painting, food trucks, bilingual art activities and the unveiling of a collection of altars created by professionals artists and local organizations. Other highlights include the first Los Angeles Día de los Muertos Parade & Festival between Broadway and Spring Street on October 19th from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The parade starts at 7:00 p.m. Altars will be on display throughout the 15 days of the event.

Catalina Museum Family Festival Dia De Los Muertos

When: 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., November 1st

Where: Catalina Museum of Art and History, 217 Metropole Ave, Avalon

Cost: Museum admission is $18 for adults; children 15 and under are admitted free

Hop on a boat and head to Catalina for a Day of the Dead celebration, the music of Mariachi Las Catrinas and Sin Frontera, a puppet show, an art contest, a tequila tasting, local food vendors, and a Barbie Día de Muertos raffle includes doll.

Dia de los Muertos in Fuego

When: 1st-2nd November

Where: Fuego at Hotel Maya, 700 Queensway Drive, Long Beach

Cost: Free entry, food and drinks available for purchase

The two-day celebration at this oceanfront Latin restaurant includes a performance by Grammy Award-winning Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea, as well as a face painting station, DJs and altars to honor the departed.

Riverside Day of the Dead

When: November 2nd 1pm-10pm, November 3rd 11am-7pm

Where: Market Street between University Avenue and 14th Street

Cost: Free

The Riverside celebration will span two days this year and it will be a huge celebration with thousands of people expected to party on the street. Expect lots of altars, live music, a Catriana pageant, live music, dance performances and even lucha libre wrestling.

Dia de los Muertos at the Valais Annenberg PetSpace

When: November 2nd from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m

Where: 12005 Bluff Creek Dr., Playa Vista

Since pets are part of the family, Valais organizes a Day of the Dead event for animals that have touched people’s lives. People may bring a photo of a pet to hang on the community altar, and there will be supplies there to decorate your tribute. And yes, of course people can bring their current pets with them.

The city of Ontario celebrates Día de los Muertos

When: Until November 17th

Where: 225 S. Euclid Avenue, Ontario

Cost: Free

The Ontario Museum of History & Art and the City of Ontario have teamed up to offer several events to mark the Day of the Dead. Highlights include the museum’s annual Día de los Muertos exhibition, which includes paintings, sculpture, mixed media, photography and altar installations. The exhibition is open until November 17th. There will also be a reception at the DÍa de los Muertos Gallery on November 1st, which will include a performance by Ballet Folklorico Mi Lindo Mexico and a Día de los Muertos procession on the same day from 1 to 5 p.m. The procession will begin at the D Street and Euclid Avenue and ends at the R. Jack Mercer Community Bandstand.

Dia de los Muertos celebration at Anaheim Cemetery

When: November 2nd

Where: 1400 E Sycamore St, Anaheim

Cost: Free

The cemetery will honor those who died with a celebration that will include ballet folklorico dances and mariachi performances. People receive free bouquets of marigolds to decorate gravesites or home altars, as well as free Pan de Muertos. Families are also welcome to create personal altars at the gravesites of loved ones.

Orange County Heritage Museum

When: October 27th, 6-10 p.m

Where: 3101 W. Harvard St., Santa Ana

Cost: Free

The museum celebrates Dia de Los Muertos with a community altar that includes images and offerings for people and pets, as well as live entertainment, food, vendors and crafts.
