BREAKING: Two of the three children were injured in the shooting, one has life-threatening injuries

From Tribune staff reporting

BIRMINGHAM – Five people were leaving a youth soccer practice Tuesday when an unknown gunman fired shots into their vehicle, wounding three people, including two children, according to Birmingham Sgt. LaQuitta Wade.

Wade said police were notified by a ShotSpotter alert about shots fired in the 1400 block of 3rd Ave West on Tuesday around 8:11 p.m. The alert revealed that approximately 20 shots were fired during the incident.

When officers arrived, they found an adult male and two juvenile victims injured by the gunfire. Birmingham Fire and Rescue crews arrived on scene and transported the juvenile victims to Children’s Hospital and the adult victim to UAB Hospital.

“The victims were traveling in their vehicle on 3rd Avenue West when an unknown suspect in another vehicle began firing shots at the family’s vehicle,” Wade said. “The injuries suffered by a young person are life-threatening.”

No one is currently in custody, Wade said.
