People are mourning the loss of a valued motorsport athlete after his death in a horror accident in South Australia.

Deane “Feathers” Boston, 76, was traveling on the Wilkins Highway near Jamestown, north of Adelaide, when his motorcycle left the road on October 3.

“You have excelled in everything you have tried.” “Your earthly journey is over, but your legendary reputation will never die,” reads a Facebook post.

“We can’t believe you’re gone, but you will always be with us, in our hearts, our minds and our lives, forever.”

Boston was married to his wife Liz for 46 years and the couple had one son, Craig.

He often took part in the grueling Finke Desert Race in the Northern Territory – including the first staging of the world-famous event in 1976.

The two-day race is considered Australia’s toughest off-road motorsport event – and attracts competitors from across the country.

The race is also estimated to bring almost $8 million to the Alice Springs economy.

In June this year, David Walsh successfully defended his title, winning the Bicycles category for a record fifth time.

Beau Robinson won the car class, having previously been on the podium six times.

The organizers of the legendary Finke Desert Race also paid tribute to Boston on social media.

“We are saddened to hear that one of the original ’76ers’ competitors has died as a result of a motorcycle accident,” the post reads.

“Feathers loved motorcycling with one guiding principle; They had to go fast and he was pretty good at accomplishing that.

“It’s hard to believe we’ve lost him, but he will always be a part of the Finke family.”

“Our condolences go out to the extended Boston family.”
