12 dead, 33 injured in bus accident in Egypt

At least 12 people were killed and 33 injured in Egypt on Monday when a bus overturned on a highway between Cairo and the Red Sea coast, according to the Egyptian Health Ministry.

In a statement, the ministry said 28 ambulances were sent to the scene of the accident on the Al-Galala highway, which connects Cairo with Red Sea coastal towns including Ain Sokhna.

Local media, including state ones Al Ahram The newspaper reported that the victims included students from Galala University in Galala City, one of the government’s national projects in Suez Governorate.

The private, state-affiliated news channel Sada al-Balad reported that preliminary investigations revealed that the bus driver was driving too fast and lost control of the vehicle.

According to a 2022 report by statistics agency CAPMAS, traffic accidents in Egypt claimed 7,101 lives in 2021, an increase of 15.2% compared to 2020.
