Live updates: Israeli attacks in Lebanon, Hezbollah ceasefire calls, war in Gaza

The US demand that Israel improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza highlights tensions between the two countries’ governments and growing frustration in Washington, an Israeli expert told CNN.

Israeli forces’ ongoing operations in the north of the enclave are complicating efforts to deliver humanitarian aid, Yaakov Katz, a senior columnist for the Jerusalem Post, told CNN’s Lynda Kinkade.

Previously, CNN reported that the Biden administration had sent a letter to Israel urging it to take action within the next 30 days to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza or risk violating US law foreign military aid, suggesting that U.S. military aid may be at risk.

The Israeli government is reviewing the letter, CNN analyst Barak Ravid and Reuters reported.

“This is just part of the growing frustration as America’s general election approaches in just a few weeks. They want this war behind them,” Katz said.

According to Katz, Israel still sees the war as “existential.” He said the conflict appeared to be going “pretty well” for Israel compared to the days after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack a year ago, which caught Israel by surprise.

Regarding Hezbollah, Katz said Israel decided to change the equation last month, as evidenced by its pager and walkie-talkie attacks, the killing of top leaders within the Iran-backed organization and the deterioration of its long-range missile capabilities .
