Overland Park pediatric neurologist pleads guilty in child pornography case

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A pediatric neurologist who worked at hospitals in Kansas City, Missouri, and Overland Park, Kansas, pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to 13 counts of attempting to produce child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography .

According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Kansas City, Brian Aalbers’ plea includes the government agreeing to ask a federal judge to sentence Aalbers to at least 20 years in prison without parole, but not more than 30 years without parole. Missouri.

Aalbers, 50, admitted to secretly recording 13 victims using hidden video cameras to produce child pornography.

According to the press release, the video recordings discovered by police officers took place from October 4, 2020 to October 28, 2023.

Investigators determined that no current or former patients of Albers were involved in the child pornography.

According to the news release, Albers sent suicidal text messages and Lenexa police officers found Albers at a Lenexa hotel along with a backpack with electronics inside.

He was taken for voluntary psychiatric treatment and the hospital kept his backpack.

According to a court document, investigators obtained search warrants for the devices, including a silver Apple MacBook A1707, a black iPhone and other items used to produce the child pornography.

They found more than 1,000 pornographic videos of the child victims.

When investigators searched Albers’ iCloud account, they found additional child pornography.

Albers is being held in federal custody without bail.

No sentencing date has been set.
