ENDERLIN, N.D. – Luke Wall has more hardware on him than the family shed at home.

The eighth-grader from Enderlin was injured in a freak accident during a varsity game in Mayville.

After nearly two weeks of multiple surgeries to save his left leg, he has turned the corner and is able to leave the intensive care unit at the University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis.

“I can take a few steps, but that’s about it,” 14-year-old Luke said during a Zoom interview from his room.

“I am very happy with the progress and the direction in which everything is going. “It’s going in the best direction possible given the circumstances,” said Joe Wall, Luke’s father.

This arterial tear during a game between Enderlin and MayPort CG came out of nowhere. An alert doctor in Mayville found no foot pulse in Luke’s left leg, triggering a whirlwind of activity.

“I probably realized it when they sent me to Fargo. “It won’t be as easy as expected,” Luke said quietly.

Surgeons at the University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital used part of an artery from Luke’s right leg to save the left leg and foot.

Luke’s parents, Joe and Beth, alternate with Luke in the Twin Cities, commuting between their home and there. While Luke focuses on getting well soon.

“The doctors said it was a marathon and not a sprint, it would depend on how quickly his body heals before the next step,” Joe said.

“I have high expectations and this helps me get back on the court,” said Luke, a talented, hard-working athlete and Enderlin student.

“We talked about it being a good thing to work towards the next time he’s back on the field or on the court,” Joe said.

So many cities are rallying around Luke and his family.
“Everyone does so much, it’s so hard to put into words how it feels and what it means to us,” Joe said of the support.
