Stephen King’s story about a bullied high school teenager with murderous telekinetic powers was a best-selling novel that became a gory horror film classic.

Critical scenes from 1976’s “Carrie,” starring Sissy Spacek as the title character, were filmed at the Pier Avenue School, which was later converted into the Hermosa Beach Community Center.

Just in time for Halloween on Friday, October 25th, “Carrie” returns to the location where it was filmed for an annual screening. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and begins with a 1970s-themed prom party in the Community Center gym, followed by the … performance at 8 p.m. at the Hermosa Beach Community Theater.

Organizers encourage attendees to wear “best prom attire.”

The Hermosa Beach Museum is open from 6 to 8 p.m. and features a shower with original pink tiles from the film as part of its permanent collection.

According to Lisa Nichols, the city’s community resource director, the museum will also feature a PowerPoint presentation that provides behind-the-scenes access to the filming locations at the community center.

“When we first ran this event in 2018, I was able to contact one of the cinematographers who worked on ‘Carrie’ and he shared some behind-the-scenes information and confirmed all of the locations used at the Community Center for the film,” Nichols said.

Memorable scenes from the film were filmed in the gym in front of the building’s facade and in front of the outside staircase where the Hermosa Beach Museum is located.

The original shower is now the city’s archives room and therefore not open to the public, Nichols said, but an actual shower is on display at the museum.

The event is hosted by the Hermosa Beach Community Resources Department, along with Leadership Hermosa Beach, the Hermosa Beach Museum and the South Bay Music Connection, which will perform at the prom.

Food and beverage concessions and photo opportunities will be available at the event.

The community center is located at 710 Pier Ave.

Due to the film’s R rating, the event is suitable for participants aged 18 and over.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or at Hermosabeach.gov.
