Seymour man arrested for kidnapping and sexual assault of a minor

WATERBURY – Officers with the Waterbury Police Department responded to a report of a kidnapping and sexual assault involving a minor around 7 p.m. on Oct. 9 near Fulton Park on Cooke Street.

Michael Dewitt, 45, of Seymour, who was already wanted by the New Haven Police Department for a previous case of sexual assault of a minor, was arrested Oct. 11.

An arrest warrant had recently been issued for him in connection with the incident in New Haven.

After his arrest by New Haven authorities, Dewitt now faces additional charges from Waterbury police.

Investigators with the Waterbury Major Crimes and Special Victims Unit obtained an active arrest warrant for Dewitt and set his bond at $1.25 million.

He will be arraigned today in New Haven and is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 16 in Waterbury.

Authorities commend the cooperative efforts of the New Haven Police Department, Waterbury Police Department, Major Crimes Unit and Special Victims Unit in apprehending the suspect.

Police are asking anyone with further information about Michael Dewitt to contact their local police department.
