An officer-involved shooting in Newport News leaves one man dead

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Newport News officers were placed on leave Monday after an officer-involved shooting left one man dead.

Officers arrived in the 500 block of Crown Court around 5:37 p.m. and found an “agitated” man displaying a weapon. According to NNPD, a crisis officer was on scene and officers asked the man to drop the weapon for several minutes.

The man then pointed the gun at the officers and the officers fired their weapons, hitting the man. Officers immediately rendered aid, but he died as a result of his injuries, Newport News police said.

After the investigation, it was discovered that the man had an air pistol. He was also described by police as “suicidal.”

No officers were injured and the officers involved have been placed on leave.
