OTT release date for ‘Thangalaan’ announced: When and where can you watch Chiyaan Vikram’s historical drama?

Chiyaan Vikram’s fans have been patiently waiting for the OTT debut of ‘Thangalaan’ for ages. The film’s producer finally shared some good news: the historical action drama will release on Netflix this Diwali! In an interview with Pinkvilla, film producer Gnanavel Raja addressed all the speculations about the film’s OTT debut. Addressing rumors that the delay in the film’s OTT release was due to financial turmoil, he confirmed that the film will be available for streaming from Diwali.

“They (Netflix) have scheduled the release for Deepavali (Diwali). They wanted a festival release as Thangalaan is a big film. However, our favorite YouTubers claim that there are some problems with Thangalaan. They have a knack for claiming there is a problem when in reality there isn’t,” he said.

About “Thangalaan”

Thangalaan (translated as “Son of Gold”) is a 2024 Tamil action-adventure film directed by Pa. Ranjith, who co-wrote the script with Tamil Prabha and Azhagiya Periyavan. Produced by KE Gnanavel Raja under the banners of Studio Green and Neelam Productions, the film stars Vikram in five different roles alongside Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Daniel Caltagirone, Pasupathy and Hari Krishnan.

Set during the British Raj, the story follows a fierce tribal leader who faces the wrath of an apparent sorceress after helping a British officer search for gold in his village.

The project was first announced in December 2021 with the working title Chiyaan 61 and marks Vikram’s 61st film as a lead actor. The official title was announced in October 2022. Filming began the same month and continued in phases until it was completed in early July 2023. Principal photography took place in various locations including Chennai, Andhra Pradesh, Madurai and Karnataka. The film features music by GV Prakash Kumar, cinematography by A. Kishor Kumar and editing by Selva RK.

Thangalaan was released worldwide on August 15, 2024 on the occasion of India’s Independence Day and premiered in Standard, 3D and EPIQ formats. Although it received mixed reviews, critics praised the performances of Vikram, Parvathy Thiruvothu and Daniel Caltagirone, as well as the action sequences and background music by GV Prakash Kumar. However, they criticized the film for historical inaccuracies, weak visual effects and uneven script. The Hindi dubbed version, released on September 6, 2024, became a box office hit, but the film grossed between ₹72 and ₹100 crore overall on a budget of ₹100-150 crore, classifying it as a box office failure.
