Tragic and threatening

Just weeks before the assembly elections in Maharashtra, the tragic murder of Baba Siddique – a former Maharashtra minister and three-time MP – has inflamed political sentiment and sent shockwaves across the state. Siddique, who was shot dead outside his son Zeeshan Siddique’s office, was a prominent figure in Maharashtra’s political and social circles. He was known for his deep connections within Bollywood. His death raises critical questions about the current state of law and order in Mumbai, a city that has struggled with gang violence in the past.

According to reports, the attack occurred on the night of October 12, 2024 in Bandra’s bustling Kher Nagar – a politically relevant location that represents the cosmopolitan spirit of the city. It is pertinent to note here that Siddique enjoyed a high profile political and social presence and was given Y category security. The fact that the perpetrators managed to break through this security shield reflects poorly on the law and order situation in the state – an accusation that was actively raised by the opposition parties. Siddique’s death alone is a confirmation of this claim. Two of the attackers were quickly caught by police, while the third fled the scene, only to be caught later. Meanwhile, the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang – a criminal organization previously involved in high-profile attacks, including an assassination attempt on Bollywood star Salman Khan – has claimed responsibility for Siddique’s murder. However, the police are still investigating the case.

The most important factor in this case would be the motive behind the crime. Currently, the investigation into the murder points to several possible motives: from a contract killing related to a business dispute to tensions over a slum redevelopment project. The issue of slum redevelopment is particularly relevant given the significant risks in Mumbai’s real estate market, which is often characterized by shadow deals and deep-rooted corruption. Given the proximity of the upcoming general elections, there is also speculation about political motives which, if proven true, could open a Pandora’s box in the state.

The intersection of politics, underworld crime and economics presents an alarming tango. Mumbai has been the target of violence emanating from such an interface in the past. Even the slightest hint of a return of this trend seems threatening. It is high time that the police and other security agencies play a proactive and decisive role in limiting the consequences of the incident, if any. The political parties must also show sufficient sensitivity to prevent the situation from escalating further. For the good of the state as a whole, limited political achievements must be forgone. From today’s perspective, immediately after the incident, political figures from all parties condemned the attack. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the Home Ministry portfolio, visited Lilavati Hospital where Siddique was declared dead after unsuccessful resuscitation efforts. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, while expressing shock and regret, assured the public of a thorough investigation. However, the opposition wasted no time in voicing sharp criticism of the government. The ruling alliance must manage the situation carefully – ensuring that justice is served while defending its law and order record.

In conclusion, Baba Siddique’s murder is a reflection of the deep systemic problems plaguing Maharashtra’s political and social fabric. It will be critical for the state to not only bring perpetrators to justice, but also address the underlying causes that enable such violent acts. In the run-up to the general elections, the state’s political landscape appears to have changed irrevocably and the way leaders respond to this crisis will influence Maharashtra’s immediate future.
