Two Callaway County sheriff’s deputies shot, suspect dead

CALLAWAY COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)

According to the Callaway County Sheriff’s Office, two of their deputies were shot on westbound I-70 Monday morning.

In a news release, the sheriff’s office said an officer stopped a 37-year-old Texas driver who was alone in the vehicle and informed Callaway County Join Communications that the driver had multiple out-of-state felony warrants for his arrest . Shortly thereafter, a second deputy arrived on scene.

The deputy then told the CCJC that the driver was resisting arrest.

Moments later, CCSO said officers reported shots were fired and that both officers were shot and taken to a nearby hospital.

According to the Callaway County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

One deputy is currently in serious condition and undergoing surgery, while the other is in stable condition, the CCSO said.

The westbound lanes of I-70 in Callaway County were closed Monday morning due to a police incident.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol announced at 5:06 a.m. on “X” that the eastbound lanes of I-70 had reopened while westbound traffic was being detoured at the 144 mile marker.

The Callaway County Sheriff’s Office told ABC 17 News staff at the scene that I-70 westbound is closed from Exit M toward Hatton to Exit 139 toward Millersburg.

The sheriff’s office said it was investigating but did not elaborate.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol posted on “X.” at 4:26 a.m. that troopers were responding to a police incident on I-70 westbound at the 139 mile marker.

ABC 17 News crews arrived on scene at 4:15 a.m. and saw Boone County and Callaway County sheriff’s deputy vehicles and a Bearcat vehicle.
